Finding a job in 2021

Welcome to February!

The Career matter I would be talking about this month is "Finding a Job"! You would agree with me that this is topical now for reasons commonly known.

According to statistics, Nigeria’s unemployment rate hit 27.1% by the second quarter of 2020 whilst the world average remained at 5.7%. Nigerian institutions graduate about 1.8 million students annually on average. A few years ago, the Federal Inland Revenue made it known that they received over 700,000 applications for the 500 positions they advertised. The Nigerian Police force also received a million applications for 10,000 job openings they advertised. As an HR practitioner, these scenarios play out before me on a regular basis and by this I mean, too many applicants seeking limited job opportunities have become the norm.

Despite the apparently gloomy picture, I have reason to believe these outcomes will improve with all hands on deck. Let's start by focusing on young graduates and what they can do to make themselves "hire-ready" at all times. Also to be sure they are looking in the right place, at the right time for the right roles.

Let's start with the following question;

Where, When & How should a fresh graduate begin a job search?
