Introducing Career Matters

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the very first edition of "Career Matters".

Career Matters is an online interactive blog aimed at communicating experience-based insights; one matter at a time, to a network of professionals enabling them to make impactful career decisions.

I have spent over 25 years of my life in human resource management and a critical part of this has been engaging with employees on career-related matters. Discussions around their "career highs" and "career lows', I have had the opportunity to learn from these exchanges and I am inspired to put my thoughts together to facilitate a platform that enables further learning.

For the purpose of career matters, I’d like to define the term “career”. There are many viewpoints in literature today on what a career means but I’d like to express my views on the definition of a career in simple terms.

A career is an evolving sequence of a person’s work experience over time and I find this definition so expressive because of the action words "evolving sequence" which suggests that it’s a thing that happens over time.

Another definition that further helps me break this down says, a career can be defined as the sequence of employment-related positions, roles, activities and experiences encountered by a person. Now, this appears to be the definition most of us are used to because when we hear the term “career” we begin to imagine work-related roles people have held over time, job titles, we see positions/roles that have been held in organisations.

Whilst this may be the most appropriate definition of a career, it is also acceptable to say that a career is a gainful form of living that an individual engages in overtime in a structured manner. In other words, it doesn’t have to be employed within an establishment, it could be a form of employment established by the individual. Again, all of these definitions would apply for the purpose of career matters where the objective is to speak about matters that enable readers to make impactful career decisions.

In every post, I would be discussing a specific "matter" on which I would be espousing my views in exchange for contributions from readers. Together we will create learning points that can support individuals make more impactful career decisions.

I do have to pause on this inaugural post to appreciate my Career matters vision helpers who have inspired and supported this dream to "Go-live". The combination of Junior, Damilola, Blessing & Franklin have been a blessing - thank you Guys, you will never walk alone IJN.
